Our obsession with
material goods is so automatic that we've grown
numb to the clutter in our closets, cabinets,
and garages. Yet, this excess is what Jesus warned
us about when he said, For where your treasure
is, there also will your heart be. (Lk 12:34).
Here are steps you can take to lighten your load.
Make a List
On a piece of paper, divide your major possessions
into two categories, "Need" and "Want".
Consider items such as videos, music CDs, clothing,
small appliances, sports equipment and electronics.
Then concentrate on the "Want" list.
Devise Guidelines
for Keeping or Getting Rid of It
If you haven't worn it, or used it in the past
6 months, consider living without it. If you have
similar items, give one away.
Ask Yourself
"Does Someone Else Need It More?"
Your rarely used bicycle could become someone's
transportation to work or school.
Let It Go
Once you have identified your excess, give it
to an organisation that will get it to people
who need it. For help, call your parish office,
or social service department. Throw out what's
left.
